The five archetypes
What Kind of Witch Are You?
Not the aesthetic kind of question — the useful kind. Which archetype you are is really a question about rhythm: when your power arrives, what reliably drains it, and which of your gifts has quietly been costing you something.
Most witch quizzes sort you by season, colour or a kitchen you would like to have. That is fun, and it tells you nothing you can use on a Tuesday. The five archetypes below are drawn along something more practical: how you actually move through your life. When you make your clearest decisions. What leaves you flat for two days afterwards. What you do at two in the morning when you cannot sleep.
Almost nobody is only one of these. One usually leads, and a second sits underneath it as a shadow — the part of you that is genuinely there but rarely claimed. That pairing is where most of the recognition happens, and it is the part a quiz can find faster than you can.
Read the five. One of them will be uncomfortable in a specific way.
☽ The Moon Witch
Keeper of rhythm, tides, and the knowing that arrives before the evidence.
The Moon Witch runs on cycles rather than schedules. She has weeks where she can move mountains and weeks where getting dressed is the achievement, and she has usually been taught to treat the second kind as failure. It is not failure. It is the shape of how she works, and the moment she stops fighting it, most of what looked like inconsistency turns out to have been a rhythm nobody named for her.
Her intuition arrives ahead of her reasoning. She knows a room is wrong before anyone has said anything strange in it; she knows a message is bad news before she opens it. Because the knowing comes without an argument attached, she has learned to distrust it in front of other people, and to be quietly right about it later. Her practice is not developing intuition — she already has more than she uses. It is learning to act on it while it is still inconvenient.
She is most powerful at night, at thresholds, in the hour after everyone else has gone to bed. Water helps her think: baths, rain, the sea, a long shower when a decision will not resolve. She dreams vividly and remembers, and she is the one friend who takes the dream seriously.
Signs you might be her
- Your energy has a monthly shape you can predict but rarely plan around.
- You knew something was off long before you could explain why.
- You do your clearest thinking near water, or after midnight.
- You have been called "too sensitive" by someone who later needed exactly that sensitivity.
- You keep a record of dreams, or wish you did.
What it costs her
The cost of feeling everything early is waiting too long to say it. She senses the ending of a relationship, a job, a friendship months before she names it, and spends those months quietly grieving something nobody else knows is over. The work is speaking at the moment of knowing rather than the moment of proof.
🌿 The Forest Witch
Rooted tender, kitchen-magician, keeper of the slow spells.
The Forest Witch thinks with her hands. Her best decisions arrive while she is chopping onions, folding laundry, repotting something that has outgrown its pot. Sitting down to "think it through" produces nothing; twenty minutes of kneading dough produces the answer whole. This is not a quirk to work around. It is her method, and it works.
She makes places feel like places. A room she has lived in for a week already has a smell, a chair that is the good chair, a mug that is hers. People eat better at her table and stay later than they meant to. She notices who has gone quiet, who has not eaten, who is about to break — and she tends it without being asked, usually without being thanked, often without being noticed at all.
Her magic is cumulative rather than dramatic. She is not the woman with the sudden breakthrough; she is the woman whose garden, ten years in, is unrecognisable from the plot she started with. She underestimates this constantly, because the world rewards speed and she has none. The oak takes sixty years and does not apologise.
Signs you might be her
- You solve problems while doing something with your hands, never while sitting still.
- You are the one who notices who has gone quiet at the table.
- You need two days to recover from one big social Saturday.
- You have been the reliable one for so long that nobody checks whether you are alright.
- Slow, tended things — sourdough, a garden, a ten-year friendship — are where your best work lives.
What it costs her
She tends everyone else's garden first. Not out of martyrdom — she genuinely loves it — but the arithmetic eventually catches up, and a resentment she is not allowed to voice starts building underneath the loveliness. The work is not to stop tending. It is to be tended, including by herself, before the resentment does the speaking for her.

✦ The Star Witch
Pattern-seer, visionary, the one already standing two steps ahead.
The Star Witch sees the shape of a thing before it exists. Give her a half-formed idea and she returns a structure, a five-year arc, and the three obstacles nobody else had thought of yet. She is usually right, and usually early, which in practice means she spends years being told she is unrealistic and then watching the realistic people arrive at her conclusion by a longer road.
She thinks in systems and connections. Conversations that others experience as separate she experiences as one continuous pattern; she remembers what someone said eight months ago and how it contradicts what they are saying now. This makes her formidable at strategy and exhausting at small talk, and she has often decided the second thing means something is wrong with her.
Scale does not frighten her — being seen wanting it does. She has a habit of shrinking an ambition into something sensible before she says it out loud, then feeling hollow when the sensible version succeeds. Her practice is not learning to dream bigger. She already dreams enormous. It is learning to say the real size of it in a room with other people in it.
Signs you might be her
- You see where something is going long before the people running it do.
- You have edited an ambition down to a "reasonable" version before saying it aloud.
- You find small talk genuinely harder than a difficult strategic conversation.
- You remember the contradiction between what someone said then and what they are saying now.
- You get restless the moment a thing is built and working.
What it costs her
Living two steps ahead means rarely being where she actually is. She is already in next year while this Tuesday goes unlived, and she mistakes the resulting flatness for something being wrong with her life rather than with her location in time. The work is arriving in the present she already built.
◉ The Shadow Witch
Truth-teller, threshold-keeper, the one who names what the room is avoiding.
The Shadow Witch is the one who says the thing. Not cruelly — she is often the gentlest person present — but she cannot comfortably participate in a pleasant fiction, and everyone in the room can feel her not participating. This has cost her invitations. It has also made her the person others come to at two in the morning when they finally want the truth.
She is unafraid of grief, anger, endings, and the parts of people that other people flinch from. Where others manage difficulty, she goes toward it. Friends bring her the thing they have not told anyone, because they know she will not perform shock and will not try to fix it in under a minute.
Her power lives at thresholds: the ending of things, the honest conversation, the decision that cannot be taken back. She is not drawn to darkness for its own sake — she is drawn to what is real, and a great deal of what is real happens to sit in the places most people have agreed not to look.
Signs you might be her
- You are the person friends tell the thing they have told no one else.
- You physically cannot pretend to agree with something you do not believe.
- Other people's grief does not frighten you; small talk about nothing does.
- You have ended things — jobs, relationships, friendships — that others would have endured for years.
- You are more comfortable at 2 a.m. than at a party at 9.
What it costs her
She turns the same unflinching gaze on herself and calls it honesty when it has become punishment. The clarity she extends to everyone else arrives at her own door as a prosecution. The work is granting herself the mercy she has always given other people first.
♆ The Rose Witch
Devotee of beauty, pleasure, and the courage it takes to want openly.
The Rose Witch treats beauty as a necessity rather than a decoration. The good sheets, the real flowers, the perfume worn on a Tuesday for nobody — these are not indulgences she is getting away with, they are how she stays alive to her own life. She has usually been taught otherwise, and has usually half-believed it.
She feels in colour and texture. A meal, a fabric, a piece of music, a person's hands — she registers all of it at a resolution most people do not, and it moves her in ways she has learned to downplay. Her desire is strong and specific, and she has spent years making it smaller and more palatable so as not to be called too much.
Her magic is in wanting out loud. Not in getting — in the wanting itself, spoken plainly, without the apology attached. This is far harder than it sounds, and she is one of the few people constitutionally built to do it. When she does, other people around her start allowing themselves things, which is its own kind of spell.
Signs you might be her
- You notice the texture, the light, the smell of a room before you notice the furniture.
- You have called your own wants "too much" before anyone else got the chance.
- You keep something beautiful that has no use whatsoever, and would defend it.
- Pleasure feels like something you have to earn rather than something you are allowed.
- You dress for yourself on days no one will see you.
What it costs her
Wanting openly has been punished often enough that she learned to want quietly, then to want less, then to lose track of what she wanted at all. Attending to everyone else's pleasure becomes the safe substitute. The work is naming a desire, in the first person, without immediately making it reasonable.
How to tell which one is yours
Reading the five and picking the one you like is the least reliable method there is. Everyone wants to be the Star Witch; almost nobody volunteers for the Shadow. The archetype that is actually yours is usually the one you recognised with a small flinch rather than a warm feeling.
A more honest test is behavioural. Where were you standing the last time you solved something difficult — sitting at a desk, walking, with your hands in water? What specifically left you unable to speak to anyone for the rest of the evening? When you cannot sleep, what does your mind do: replay, plan, grieve, or want?
Those three answers place most people. The quiz asks thirty-two questions of that kind, which is enough to find both the archetype that leads and the shadow underneath it — including the pairing you would not have chosen for yourself.

Questions people ask
- How many witch archetypes are there?
- There is no fixed, universal list — different traditions name different types, and popular quizzes often use green, kitchen, hedge, sea or cosmic witch. Wish & Witch works with five: the Moon Witch, the Forest Witch, the Star Witch, the Shadow Witch and the Rose Witch. They are drawn along how a woman actually moves through her life — her rhythm, her intuition, where her power lives and what it costs her — rather than by aesthetic.
- Can I be more than one kind of witch?
- Almost everyone is. One archetype usually leads, and a second sits underneath it as a shadow — the part of you that is real but rarely claimed. A Forest Witch with a Star shadow, for example, is a woman with a genuinely enormous vision who keeps shrinking it into something sensible. The pairing is usually more revealing than the primary archetype alone.
- Does this mean I practise witchcraft?
- No. These archetypes describe temperament, rhythm and the way you meet the world. Some readers have a spiritual practice, many have none. Nothing here requires belief in anything supernatural to be useful.
- How accurate is the quiz?
- It is a reflective tool, not a diagnostic one. The questions ask about behaviour — when you make your best decisions, what drains you, what you do at 2 a.m. — rather than what you would like to be true about yourself. Most people recognise themselves immediately; if you do not, the result is worth less than your own sense of yourself.
- Is the quiz free?
- Yes. The quiz and your archetype are free. The full reading — your shadow pairing, the pattern you carry, the letter written to you, and the 28-day path — is part of the Wish & Witch subscription.
